Check my kit

Check your computer, DJ software and gear work with DJ back 2 back before you sign up. It takes a minute, and nothing you pick is kept.

If your controller has no master out, use an audio interface for your speakers.

Your gear

USB controller

  1. Plug in your controller and open your DJ software.
  2. On a Mac: In your DJ software's audio settings, set the output to your controller itself, not a combined (aggregate) device.
  3. On Windows: Never put headphones on a second device or adapter.
  4. If your controller gives your computer only one stereo pair, you can't hear your partner on their own in your headphones: use an audio interface or a controller with four outputs, or try it and let us know how you get on.
  5. Keep one deck empty, for example deck 1. In MIDI Learn, map its fader: that fader is your partner's.
  6. Map your partner's fader, EQ and filter to a channel you're not playing on: your DJ software hears these knobs too.

Your controller

Pioneer DDJ-400

Should work

  1. In your DJ software, set main to the DDJ-400's outputs 1–2 and headphones to its outputs 3–4.

Your software

rekordbox

  1. Under Source, pick rekordbox, listed under DJ software.

In a set, the app shows these buttons and messages: READY · Set starts in · Handover · Accept handover · Confirm partner is mixed out · Fader up.

  • When offered a handover, make sure your partner's fader is up, then click Accept and mix in your track.
  • You have control. Once you're in, confirm your partner is mixed out.
  • When you're ready, you hand over, your partner accepts and tells you when you're mixed out, and you can stop your track.

  1. Open Windows Settings, then System, then Sound.
  2. Under Output, pick your interface's Out 1-2. Windows' Sound settings, under Output: Out 1-2 (MOTU M Series) picked, the default device.

Your internet

Use a wired connection wherever possible.

Upload speed: 5 Mbps or more, or quality may drop.

How a set sounds depends on both DJs' internet connections, which we don't control. We can't promise a connection will be good enough.
